RAY BLK PATIENCE

From her inauguration as the BBC’s Sound of 2017, Ray BLK has quickly become a familiar name, although until last year, the British rapper/singer was very much an underground talent. How she suddenly shot to the mainstream consciousness? Well, her brand new release suggests that it involved plenty of waiting. ‘Patience’ is a multi-faceted discussion of fame, from criticising the fast track wannabe to believing in the slow-and-steady approach, Ray BLK’s message is pretty clear: “They say slow and steady wins the race [...] I’m fine waiting, for my pay day.” Not only does Rita Ekwere resolve this subject matter, but she also switches up her diverse talent. Through the downtempo introduction she showcases a soulful R&B vocal; the brighter, pop-adhering chorus is a firmer platform for that impressive soul; while the freestyle rap verses are surely the jewel in her 2017 crown. - HT
